World War II Roots

The roots of Jeep go all the way back to 1940 when the U.S. Army put out a contract for a light reconnaissance vehicle that was bound for theatres of war all over the world. Willys–Overland Motors was one of only 2 companies that responded, and faced the insanely challenging task of building a prototype in only 45 days.

Willy-Overland completed this task but faced with the daunting task of producing hundreds of thousands of vehicles in a short period of time, the U.S. Army handed the winning Willys – Overland design over to Ford for mass-production production. Ford produced over 650,000 Willys Jeeps during WW2 alone!

Post – War

After World War II, American GI’s returning from Europe were pining for their old trusty Jeeps and also looking for new ways to explore the country and the outdoors. In 1945, Willys – Overland started to produce the CJ (Civilian Jeep) series of Jeeps that was designed for the American consumer: the Willys-Overland CJ-2A was born.

Over the years, a whole host of Jeep CJ vehicles would come and go – but all based on the same off- road focused concept: short wheelbase, short front/rear overhangs, simple interiors, and solid axles front to back.

This concept continues to this day in the form of the modern Jeep Wrangler.

Here’s a list of all CJ models:

  • CJ-2A (1945–1949)
  • CJ-3A (1949–1953)
  • CJ-3B (1953–1968)
