While Jeeps are perfectly suited for off-roading, sometimes they can suffer from clearance issues, which is why so many Jeep owners install a lift kit. A lift kit increases clearance, which makes it easier to drive over rocks, ditches, brush, and anything else you might encounter on the trails.

To help you add clearance and height to your Jeep, we have reviewed eight of the best Jeep lift kits available in 2020.

What Size of Lift Kit Do I Need?

The particular lift kit size you require will depend mostly upon the size of tires you want to add to your Jeep.

What Heights Do Jeep Lift Kits Come in?

Typical Jeep lift kits range in height from one to 6.5 inches. There are even higher lift kits out there, but they are trickier to install and generally custom.

Lift Kit Tire Size Chart

While there are even larger lift kits available, the following lift kits accommodate the most common tire sizes:

  • A 1.5-inch lift accommodates up to 33-inch tires

  • A 2.5-inch lift accommodates up to 35-inch tires

  • A 3.5-inch lift accommodates up to 37-inch tires

Can You Really Find a Quality Lift Kit That’s Affordable?

You may assume that lift kits need to be expensive because they are used to make a significant modification to your Jeep. But, there are quite a few reputable lift kit manufacturers that offer high-quality lift kits at reasonable prices.

When we compiled this list of reviews, affordability was one of the factors we used to assess each lift kit we came across. While price can be an indicator of quality, it does not always tell the whole story.

That said, there can be a price vs. quality trade-off, so you should always focus on quality over how affordable a lift kit is. After all, not only do high-quality lift kits perform better and last longer, they are much safer.

What to Look For When Buying a Jeep Lift Kit

Choosing the right lift kit does not have to be overly complicated. As long as you are keeping an eye on the following factors, you should be able to choose a reliable and well-made lift kit for your Jeep.

Ease of Installation

If you are planning on installing your new lift kit yourself, it is worth considering how straightforward the installation process will be. The best lift kits make sure that the installation process is not overly complicated.

Whether or not a manufacturer backs its lift kit with a warranty indicates the overall quality of the product.

Quality of Construction

If you are investing in a new lift kit, chances are you want to make sure it will last. Construction quality is as important for lift kits as it is for any aftermarket accessory you use to modify your Jeep.

Size and Compatibility

You need to make sure that the lift kit you select is compatible with your particular model of Jeep, as well as sized appropriately to accommodate your desired tire size.

Type of Lift Kit

You will want to make sure you are choosing a lift kit that is the correct type for your needs. There are several types of lift kits out there – body lifts, leveling kits, and suspension lifts. Learn the difference between them and make the appropriate choice.

Review of the Best Jeep Lift Kits

As mentioned above, we ranked and reviewed what we consider to be eight of the best Jeep lift kits available in 2020. Use the following list to find the best possible lift kit for your vehicle.

What Recent Buyers Report

Recent buyers enjoyed how this lift kit made their Jeep look after installation. They also liked that the lift kit allowed their Jeep to accommodate larger 35-inch tires, which are much better suited for tackling rough terrain than the stock tires. Some buyers were disappointed by the vague nature of the instruction manual, but most were able to find YouTube videos that helped them through the installation process.

Why it Stands Out to Us

There were several reasons why this lift kit stood out to us and was chosen as our top pick for the best Jeep lift kit. First, we really like how the entire kit is constructed from high-grade steel and that it features a corrosion-resistant powder coating.

We also really liked that the entire kit is backed by a lifetime warranty from MotoFab. This kit also comes with everything you need to raise your Jeep Wrangler, which is not always the case with every aftermarket lift kit. It gives your Jeep increased clearance and allows it to accommodate a larger tire size.

Bottom Line

If you are looking for a reliable and well-made three-inch lift kit for your Jeep Wrangler, this affordable and high-quality kit from MotoFab is a great place to start. While it is time-consuming, installation is straightforward, and the kit looks great afterward.

Following installation, most buyers were satisfied with how good the lift kit looked. While many had to perform an alignment after installation, they were immediately able to equip their Jeeps with larger tires.

Why it Stands Out to Us

This lift kit was our runner up mostly because of its durability and quick installation. While some lift kits require a full day for installation and are a bit complicated for non-professionals, this lift kit is simple enough that installation takes a matter of hours.

The only reason why this kit did not make the top spot for the best overall lift kit is that it does not have the lifetime warranty you get with the MotoFab kit.

Bottom Line

If you are looking for an extremely well-built lift kit that does not require professional installation, this could be the lift kit for you. It perfectly compliments Jeep Wranglers and should out-live the lifespan of your vehicle.

Best for the Money:
TrueTwo Lift Kit by 4WSCOM

TrueTwo 2.5 Inch Coil Spacer Suspension Lift Kit Compatible with Wrangler JK Jeep

  • Very affordable
  • Easy installation
  • Includes front and rear spacers
  • Constructed of high-quality polyurethane
  • Jeep can be returned to stock height very easily

  • Not as durable as metal spacers
  • Makes the suspension much stiffer

What Recent Buyers Report

Most recent buyers are satisfied with the amount of lift their Jeep can gain with such a low priced kit. For many recent buyers, this was the first lift kit they had purchased, so it was a great way to try it out. Users also liked how easily they could install this lift kit.

Why it Stands Out to Us

Given that this is our top budget-friendly pick, it is clear that it stood out to us because of its low price. This kit works well if you are unsure if you want to invest in a full suspension lift kit.

The installation is also really straightforward, which, again, is ideal for beginners. We also like how easy it is to remove this lift kit, which is good to know for those that might plan on investing in a more expensive lift kit down the line.

Bottom Line

If you have never lifted a Jeep before but would like to give it a shot, you really cannot go wrong with this affordable lift kit. While it does not use the best quality materials, it gets the job done and is significantly less expensive than the other options.

Best Jeep JL Lift Kit:
Rough Country 67731

Rough Country 2.5' Lift Kit (fits) 2018-2020 Jeep Wrangler JL 4DR | N3 Shocks | Suspension System | 67731

  • Comes with a lifetime warranty
  • Adjustable shocks offer 8 levels of damping
  • Shock absorbers optimized for both on and off-road driving
  • Includes high-quality professionally tuned coil springs and struts
  • Comes with full suspension, bump stops, sway bar links, and all necessary hardware

  • Fairly expensive

What Recent Buyers Report

Recent buyers are satisfied with how smooth the ride is after they installed this lift kit. Most lift kits stiffen up the suspension, and it can take a while to get used to a bumpier ride, but the professionally tuned suspension system included with this lift kit makes sure the added clearance does not come at the expense of comfort.

Why it Stands Out to Us

The first thing we noticed about this lift kit is how comprehensive it is. Not only did Rough Country include everything you need to raise your Jeep JL, but they also packaged the lift kit with a full suspension system to make sure the vehicle is enjoyable to drive.

We also liked that the shock absorbers had eight levels of damping to choose from, which makes sure they are adaptable for off-roading and road-based commutes. We also like that Rough Country backed the entire package with a comprehensive warranty.

Bottom Line

If you own a Jeep Wrangler JL and you are looking for a high-end lift kit, this full-suspension lift kit from Rough Country is a great place to look. It gives your vehicle a much meaner look and adds plenty of clearance.

Best Jeep Lift Kit For Highway Driving:
Teraflex 1155200

TeraFlex 1155200 JK Leveling Kit

  • Comes with front sway bar links
  • Includes all necessary hardware
  • Corrects the factory nose-down rake
  • Designed for quick and easy installation
  • Works with stock-length shock absorbers

  • Does not work well for off-road driving
  • The instruction manual is vague at points

What Recent Buyers Report

Most recent buyers are impressed with how affordable this leveling kit is and how easily they were able to install it on their Jeep. This kit worked out well for those that were only looking for a subtle lift and primarily wanted to level out their Jeep.

Why it Stands Out to Us

We liked that this Teraflex leveling kit offered an affordable option for those that were looking to give their Jeep a small lift. We also liked that the front lift added two inches of height, while the rear lift only offered one inch. This is great for those that want to level out their Jeep after adding heavy accessories to the front of the vehicle, such as an aftermarket bumper, auxiliary lighting, a winch, and more.

We also liked that this kit made sure the Jeep would not impact comfort during on-road driving.

Bottom Line

If you are looking for an affordable way to give your Jeep a small lift or just want to level it out, this kit from Teraflex is a great place to start. It will make sure your drive remains comfortable during on-road driving, which helps for those that use their Jeep for long commutes.

Best Lift Kit For Jeep Wrangler Unlimited:

  • Designed for easy at-home installation
  • Rear track bar bracket keeps rear axle centered
  • Designed for compatibility with the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • Coil spring spacers designed for high performance during off-road driving

  • Parts are not labeled, which makes installation more difficult

What Recent Buyers Report

Most recent buyers found that this spacer kit was the perfect lift solution for Jeep Wrangler owners on a budget. Many liked that you could keep the original coils and shocks but gain the benefits of more clearance without sacrificing and ride quality.

Some found the instructions vague, but Rough Country does have an installation video on YouTube that helps.

Why it Stands Out to Us

The reason we like this lift kit is that it is a low-cost lift solution for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited but still comes back with Rough Country’s full lifetime replacement warranty. It also features high-quality build materials and a straightforward installation process that you can do at home.

We also liked this kit's versatility. It does not alter the stiffness of your vehicle’s suspension drastically but makes sure it is better suited for rough terrain. It is perfect for those that want the ability to hit the trails on weekends but still use the Jeep as a daily commuter.

Bottom Line

If you are a bit of a weekend warrior and like to take your Jeep off-roading, this kit is an affordable way to ensure your vehicle can accommodate a larger set of tires.

Best Lift Kit For Jeep Wrangler TJ:
Supreme Suspensions AZM 183.2(477) Pro

  • Made from completely corrosion-resistant materials
  • Easy, bolt-on installation that requires no specialized tools
  • Constructed of durable and lightweight high-density Delrin thermoplastic

  • Included bolts are poor quality

What Recent Buyers Report

For the most part, recent buyers were impressed with the overall value of this lift kit. It achieves the goal of raising the Jeep by 2 inches but does not come with some of the frills you get with a more expensive lift kit.

As far as installation goes, most buyers were able to fully install the kit themselves, without needing to visit a mechanic; however, most had to perform an alignment afterward.

Why it Stands Out to Us

The reason this kit stood out to us is that it allows you to raise the Jeep Wrangler TJ without having to spend much money. It is an affordable lift kit that comes with all the basics you need to lift your vehicle. While we prefer metal lift kits, the high-density Delrin material is surprisingly durable and adds very little weight to the vehicle.

Bottom Line

This lift kit is an excellent solution if you are looking to lift your Jeep TJ on a budget. While we recommend purchasing separate bolts, the lift kit is more than capable of giving your vehicle a two-inch lift, and it is easy to install.

Best Jeep YJ Lift Kit:
Rough Country 620N2

Rough Country 620N2 4' Lift Kit compatible w/ 1987-1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ w/Power Steering w/ N3 Shocks Suspension System

  • Designed to offer even weight distribution
  • Comes with a lifetime replacement warranty
  • Provides a considerable 4 inches of clearance
  • Double tapered leaf springs for added flexibility
  • Premium N3 shock absorbers are suited for both on and off-road driving

  • Fairly expensive

What Recent Buyers Report

Recent buyers were impressed by how easy it was to install this lift kit, especially given that it includes leaf springs and new shock absorbers. Off-road enthusiasts appreciate the four-inch lift. That said, some found that the leaf springs were a bit too weak for challenging terrain.

Why it Stands Out to Us

There is a lot to like about this Jeep YJ lift kit. For starters, the suspension system included in the kit is impressive. The N3 shocks feature 10-stage variable valving, and the leaf springs are double-tapered with Teflon pad inserts. These features add up to a smooth ride, which is particularly impressive given this kit raises the height of the Jeep by a full four inches.

We also really like that Rough Country backs the kit with a lifetime replacement warranty. Note that the shocks are protected by a separate three-year warranty.

Bottom Line

If you own a Jeep Wrangler YJ and you are looking to increase its off-road capabilities, this impressive 4-inch lift kit from Rough Country is a great place to start. While it is somewhat expensive, you do get a full suspension system that is compatible with the 4 inches lifted height, so it offers reasonable value.

Pros and Cons of Lift Kits

If you’re still not sure, take a look at the pros and cons of lift kits to help you make up your mind.

  1. Lift kits add ground clearance, which helps a vehicle navigate rough and uneven terrain.

  2. Lift kits allow the vehicle to accommodate larger tires, which can be helpful for off-roading and those that prefer the appearance of a Jeep with larger tires.

  3. Lift kits and larger tires often improve suspension articulation, which means you will have greater control in tighter driving situations, such as trail driving.

  4. Lift kits can give a vehicle a more impressive and aggressive appearance, which many Jeep Owners prefer.

  5. Lift kits can level out a vehicle that has a lower front end due to heavy aftermarket parts.

  1. Lift kits alter the vehicle’s overall performance, which can be an issue for those that are satisfied with the factory settings.

  2. The larger tires most people add after their vehicle is lifted usually involve a louder and less comfortable driving experience. The higher center of gravity can also result in the sensation of instability.

  3. Driving a lifted vehicle, especially a jeep, and the (usually) larger tires, will hurt your mileage.

Types of Lift Kits

Here's a quick overview of the types of lift kits to help you figure out which is the right one for you.

Suspension Lift Kits

These kits increase the overall height and ground clearance but also improve the vehicle’s off-road performance by replacing the suspension system with shock absorbers that are designed specifically for the new lifted height. These kits are popular amongst off-road enthusiasts as they make sure the suspension system works with more ground clearance.

Leveling Kits

These kits slightly raise the front of the vehicle and even out the front and rear height. They usually provide a maximum lift of about two inches in the front and one inch or less in the back.

Body Lifted Kits

Body lifted kits use spacers that are installed between the body and chassis to increase the ride height. They make it so the vehicle can accommodate larger tires. Unlike suspension lift kits, they do not replace the suspension system, which means they can result in a rougher driving experience. They are also much more affordable than the more comprehensive suspension lift kits.

Informational Overview

Here are some direct comparisons to help answer any lingering questions you may have about Jeep lift kits.

Leveling Kit vs Lift Kit

While both raise the body so the vehicle can accommodate larger tires, leveling kits raise the front higher than the rear, so the vehicle is level. Leveling kits are comparatively simple, whereas lift kits often modify suspension parts and are available in a variety of shapes and heights.

Body Lift Kits vs Suspension Lift Kits

Body lift kits raise the body of the vehicle from the frame, allowing for larger tires. They are simple and affordable. On the other hand, suspension lift kits alter the suspension system to lift it higher, and they offer a much more comfortable driving experience; however, they are more expensive.

BDS vs Rough Country Lift Kit

Rough Country lift kits are suited more for those that do most of their driving on roads and occasionally take their Jeep off-roading; while BDS kits are considered more premium lift kits and are designed for serious off-road enthusiasts. As a result, BDS are much more expensive.

Long Arm vs Short Arm Lift Kit

Short arm lift kits attach to the stock control arm, which puts stress on the suspension system if it is too high. They are more affordable and better suited for shorter lifts, while long arm kits offer a smoother ride but often cost much more.

How to Install a Lift Kit on a Jeep

Installing a lift kit is more straightforward than you might suspect. While installation for each lift kit will differ significantly, the following steps highlight how simple it can be to install a suspension lift kit.

  1. Jack the front end of the Jeep up and remove the wheels. Once you have removed the wheels, remove the brake line and the sway bar end link on both sides.

  2. Remove the shocks, starting with the upper mount. With the end link disconnected, support the axle with a pole jack.

  3. Lower the axle after disconnecting the top portion of the shock, then remove the coil spring.

  4. Install the new springs, and then the shocks. Next, fasten the bottom of the shocks. Then, reconnect everything in the reverse order.

  5. Follow the same routine for the rear end of the vehicle once the front end has been installed.

Always make sure you thoroughly read through the manufacturers' instruction manual. Be sure to refer to the video below for a more thorough overview of how you can install a Jeep lift kit:

Cory epitomizes the 'function over form' debate. His XJ Cherokee has taken many a beating due to his lust for climbing the tallest ledges he can find and is armored to the max. Welded on sliders, tube fenders, and no bumpers allow him to achieve some pretty crazy approaches. We regularly tease him that there's more rust than paint on his rig, but that’s his style. Cory's favorite new mod is a larger winch he bought off a buddy after his Smitty cooked itself, trying to yank his buddy out of a ravine.
